Being a Wife, Mother, Employee and Student. Is it Even Possible?

21. november 2017
Breakfast, children off to school, work, lunch, afternoon activities for children, time for my husband, an additional work assignment, children to bed, bed for me ... If your daily routine looks like this, you cannot imagine adding studying to the list. But you can.

The data shows that more and more adults decide to study and that at least half of part-time students are not only employed but also have pre-school children.

Due to everyday commitments, studying was considered nearly impossible just years ago. Luckily, this has changed. Nowadays, Universities and Faculties offer on-line studies that are flexible and adapted to the contemporary fast-paced way of life.

How to be a successful student if you are a young mother that does not want to prioritise studies over her children, husband and work?

All you need is a bit of courage and good organisation.

Be realistic. Your coursemates that do not have children will have more time than you. Thus, focus on one subject and study only one subject at a time. Do not take on too much work at once. This also means you may have to leave out a subject or two during the busiest months. Not to worry, you may end up studying for a month longer than others. Your goal of getting a degree is not a sprint.

Know what your priorities are and be aware that you may have to change them at times. Being a mother, partner, employee and student is not easy. It is impossible to give 100 per cent in all areas, every day. It may be that you underachieve in your assignments in order to be with your family and/or you may lose a night of sleep in order to finish an assignment.

Be honest with your professors. Your professors have to be aware that you have other responsibilities apart from your study and you might not be 100 per cent focused, and not every assignment will be of the highest quality. You should establish a fair relationship with your professors as you might need an extension date on assignments from time to time.

Plan ahead. Each subject requires a certain amount of time. Some more, some less. You might have to read an academic book on your holiday. You can plan your routine daily, e.g. “I will not do coursework until children have gone to sleep.” ... “I shall study at night one day per week.” ... “I shall not miss any of my children’s extracurricular activities” ... “I shall dedicate one day per week to my family alone.”

Remember that you too need a break. Take a break just for yourself.

Support is crucial. Without the support of your family, co-workers, parents and friends you will not make it. Find people that will support and motivate you during your hard times and, above all, find people that will understand you. You may need help here and there with chores – cooking, cleaning, shopping, and babysitting. Be actively involved your children and be aware of its importance.

Think positive and believe you can do it. Do not do everything at once but in small steps. That is how it is with all things in life.

Go full steam ahead... :)
